The Plan of exploiting groundwater

The plan proposes the use of groundwater which is not required to be used as drinking water. These uses are as follows:

Public Services

We are exploiting groundwater in the city for irrigation of public spaces and street cleaning. Trucks of service companies have two municipal water supply points located next to the two wells that are currently active: Irrigators Santa Coloma and industrials Santa Coloma. The cleaning of streets, showers of forest areas, parks and gardens that do not have automatic facilities is done with groundwater.

The Besòs River park

The Besòs River Park has a large area of wetlands that improves the quality of water from the sewage treatment plant and empties Montcada upstream from Santa Coloma. The water which is channelled, crosses the wetlands and increases its biological quality through a process of natural filtering. The daily presence of waterfowl in the park is also an indicator of an improved Besòs river in its final stretch. The Parque del Besòs River has allowed the recovery and environmental landscape of the riverbed and has enabled the generation of new habitats, enhancement of biodiversity and improved treatment of wastewater. Large tracts of irrigated lawns of the park drawing water from the well water table that has Santa Coloma at the end of walk Francesc Moragues: Santa Coloma industry. Each year 100,000 m³ of groundwater was used to sprinkle the park.

Park Can Zam

Can Zam park, covers an area of 30 hectares, currently has a network of ditch that comes from a well located near the same park:
The overall vegetation of the park as well as the supply of water from the lake is done with surface water. The annual consumption is 60000 m³, which saves the network of drinking water.

New municipal sports field

Since the same infrastructure showers Park River, the city has logged a new network of underground water contribution to the New Field Municipal Sports. Irrigation of grass football field comes also from Santa Coloma. Each year used 1,300 m³ of water for irrigation subsoil of the New Field Municipal Sports.

Education and environmetal sesibilitation

Education Program Dinámica

Since the City Council and within the "Program for Educational Dynamics" in the axis of Sustainability, was driving every year proposals for workshops and environmental education activities for savings and efficient use of water in schools and; the general population. Also at the celebration of World Environment Day, on the environmental fairs in June promoting sustainable attitudes about the new culture of water.

Save water

The City Council has launched a pilot project in the neighborhood of the Center for Santa Coloma, in order to sensitize the population and promote more efficient consumption of water. The measures have been to incorporate into the taps of the households systems reducing consumption. The pilot test, with the generic title of Save "water" has come to 140 homes in the city.

¡2500 savers of water have been distributed to homes in the city and 4500 bags for the water of the toilet!.

Improvement in the supply network water

Since 1998, Agbar has been investing in the renewal and strengthening of the supply network. The main actions have had new conduits, pipes and improvement of diversion to third.

Improvements in pollution load and treatment of sewage

Improvements in waste water treatment plant of Besòs, which is where they end up wastewater from Santa Coloma, are now a fact. Until 2002 the plant was carried out in a physical-chemical treatment of wastewater. 2003 began the operation of the pretreatment and primary treatment and by mid-2006, became operational on biological treatment, to meet the demands of European Union directives. Thanks to this, you can eliminate 92% of the pollutant load in the water and improve its quality.
At the domestic level, has been completed awareness campaigns to collect domestic vegetable oils and minerals through the collection of waste central, mobile and green dots. The collection of these oils to prevent their discharge pipes. In the next graph you can see how there is a progressive increase in the collection of vegetable oils from households in our city.

For a sustainable gardening

All new parks and gardens were built with automatic ditch, including areas of grass and wetlands of the Park River. In the new plantations, are prioritized the Mediterranean species adapted to the climate to improve their lives, and reduce water consumption and maintenance. Performed pruning sustainable, less aggressive and marinades are used with low content of nitrogen and slow release.

The exploitation of groundwater by the showers, reduces the use of drinking water at the municipal level.
